Self-esteem and perception of an individual's own competencies.
To assess children and adolesents' self-perception and self-esteem in a number of domains.
This measure may be used to assess self-perception and self-esteem in children and adolescents, to create a group profile in order to implement appropriate behavioural and educational interventions, or as an indicator of change following treatment/intervention.
Scholastic competence, social acceptance, physical appearance, athletic competence, behavioural conduct, and global self-worth. Each subscale has 6 items.
Each item is presented as a choice between two answers. For each item, the respondent indicates a) which answer is more like them, and b) whether the item is "somewhat true" or "very true" for them.

Scoring is done manually. Each item is scored from 1 to 4 with higher scores indicating more positive self-perception. Some items are reverse scored. Detailed scoring instructions are available in the manual (Harter, 1985). Specific qualifications required for scoring and interpretation are not indicated.
The norms, reliability and validity statistics included in each measure profile are those reported by the author(s) of the measure. It is important to note that altering, adding or removing questions from a measure voids these reported statistics, possibly making the revised tool unreliable and invalid.

The author reports internal consistency reliabilities (alphas) of 0.71-0.86. Further studies have reported alphas of 0.25-0.90, test-retest reliabilities of 0.18-0.90, and parent-child agreement reliabilities of 0.26-0.81 (please see Key References for more details).
Studies report evidence of exemplary convergent validity (please see Key References for more details).
