Original (BDI; 1961), short form (BSI-SF; 1972), revised version (BDI-1A; 1978), second edition (BDI-II, 1996)
To assess presence and severity of depressive symptoms. It is not specifically intended as a diagnostic measure.
The publishers state that the BDI can be used for screening and diagnosis of depression, and for monitoring therapeutic progress in both in- and outpatient populations.
Adolescents and adults ages 13-80.
Additional information to inform measure use
It has been consistently noted that females tend to have higher BDI scores than males, and that younger people (i.e., adolescents) tend to have higher BDI scores than older people. As such, the suggested cut-off scores should take these observations into consideration. Also, it has been suggested that clinicians use different cut-off scores depending on whether the measure is being used for research or diagnostic purposes.
Self-report or verbally by an administrator if necessary.
Adolescent or adult being assessed.
21
None are specifically reported, but factor analyses consistently demonstrate a 2-factor structure: somatic (12 items) and cognitive (9 items).
4-point Likert scale from 0 to 3. Each question has different response options with 0 being the least severe option and 3 being the most severe option.
5 minutes.
None (self-report). Training required for verbal administration.
Scoring and interpretation requires a doctorate in psychology, education, or a related field with relevant training and experience in assessment, or a license to practice in a health or allied health care field (e.g. doctors, nurse practitioners, social workers, etc.) Scoring can be done manually or electronically with the Q Local Scoring and Reporting software. Scoring involves summing the values of the item responses.
The norms, reliability and validity statistics included in each measure profile are those reported by the author(s) of the measure. It is important to note that altering, adding or removing questions from a measure voids these reported statistics, possibly making the revised tool unreliable and invalid.
500 participants from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. Ages ranged from 13 to 86 years. Participants were primarily Caucasian, but African- and Asian-Americans were also part of the sample.
The authors report an internal consistency (alpha) coefficient of 0.92-0.93. Further studies have found generally high alpha coefficients (generally in the 0.90s), with values ranging from 0.78 to 0.96. The authors report a 1-week test-retest reliability correlation coefficient of 0.93. Further studies have found test-retest coefficients ranging from 0.73 to 0.94, with intervals ranging from 1 to 4 weeks.
The authors report moderate concurrent and convergent validity, as well as good sensitivity. Further studies, collectively, have demonstrated exemplary concurrent, convergent, and divergent validities. Furthermore, the measure demonstrates discriminative ability and good sensitivity and specificity.
